Clothing moths are the most common form of moth. You have probably seen this pests many times near your dresser or in your closet. The clothing moth name says it all. They love to eat clothes! Moths are seldom seen because they avoid light. They are only 1/2″ long from wing tip to wing tip and buff colored. Get rid of moths for good, and find out how to prevent them in the future.

The variegated carpet beetle is spotted with grey, yellow and brown spots. Both pests feed on clothes, carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, felt, animal hair and stored woolens. Carpet beetles also feed on dead insects. Repeated thorough vacuuming and cleaning is the best control for clothes moths and carpet beetles. Dry cleaning and residual pesticides are both effective controls.

Dogwood Borer – (Thamnosphecia scitula)

This insect causes swollen irregular canker like areas on the bark of the trunk of flowering dogwoods. Most frequently it attacks the root collar or lower trunk causing welting or die back of the upper crown. Treatments include systemic pesticides which should be applied in early spring or late fall by an ISA certified arborist.

Bagworm Moth – Bagworms

This insect attacks a variety of plants but is most destructive to evergreens. One complete defoliation may kill a tree especially if it is not in good vigor. When eggs hatch in mid June the larvae leave their mother and her bag and seek a place on the host plant to build its’ own bag from twigs and leaves which they fasten together with silk. As the larvae grow their cases increase in size up to 1 ½” to 2″ long. Larvae mature during August and attach their bags to the host.

The insect bags are extremely unsightly. If not too numerous they can be picked off smaller trees and destroyed on larger trees. You will need help from an ISA certified arborist.
